The Nigerian Communications Commission set a February 28, 2024, deadline for telecom users to link their Subscriber Identity Modules to their National Identity Numbers. As a result, telecom operators blocked no fewer than 40 million phone lines over the weekend.
Compared to the 12 million phone lines that the telcos had originally intended to deactivate in compliance with the NCC mandate, this is a 28 million increase.
The NCC had instructed telcos to block SIMs that had not been connected to the NINs of their owners by February 28, 2024, in a notice dated December 20, 2023.
Reuben Mouka, the NCC’s director of public affairs, rejected extending the deadline and threatened to penalize telecoms who did not comply.
