We investigated seven major cities in the country (Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, Kano, Asaba, Benin, and Port Harcourt), and we realized that the average cooking gas (LPG) cost is N1200.

These prices range between N1,100 to N1,200 across different city gas stations.

However, you may experience slightly higher prices in areas where there are no gas stations; then retailers would have to purchase from gas stations and resell to you the end-user at higher prices, so expect a price range of N1,350 to N1,450 per kg if you are using a retailer for your refill.

If you are going to use a gas station to refill 12.5kg of gas, you will spend between N13,750 and N16,250. However, if there are no gas stations in your vicinity and you are to use a retailer for your gas refill, expect to spend between N16,875 and N18,125

12kg gas cylinder is one of the most popular choices of gas cylinder sizes for a household, especially for an average family. It is quite a standard size to use, and it lasts an average of one month for cooking for an average family when filled.

The advantage is that you do not need to visit gas stations every week if you are using a 12-kg gas cylinder, as it may take weeks or even months, depending on the usage if it is filled.

However, the disadvantage of using a 12.5kg cylinder is that it is heavier to carry and costlier to refill.

Below is the cost of refilling different sizes of cooking gas in Nigeria in kg.

Cooking Gas Sizes (KG)Cost of Refilling (Naira)
3kg Cylinder3,600
5kg Cylinder6,000
6kg Cylinder7,200
12kg Cylinder14,400
12.5kg Cylinder15,000
20kg Cylinder24,000
25 kg Cylinder30,000
50kg Cylinder60,000

One thing you need to consider is that the weight of the cylinder is usually higher than the weight of the gas that will fill it up; this is for safety reasons.

For instance, a 6kg cylinder weighs 8kg when put on a scale, and a 12.5 cylinder may weigh 14kg when empty.

Do not be confused if you go to some retailers and they refer to the 6kg gas you will buy as 8kg, and they may be referring to the actual weight of your cylinder and not the gas you are filling inside.

So, the prices given above are for the gas volume and not the actual weight of the cylinders.

Nigeria’s cooking gas sector is an important energy sector component, supplying millions of families with an efficient and clean fuel source.

Cooking gas use in Nigeria has increased due to urbanization and the desire for cleaner energy sources.

The government has encouraged using cooking gas, especially in rural areas where they rely heavily on coal and wood for cooking.

Some interventions by the government, such as giving out free gas cylinders to Nigerians, have increased the use of LPG gas, and this pressure in the usage of cooking gas has seen an increase in the price of LPG gas due to the high demand for the product.

Several factors impact Nigeria’s cooking gas prices, including worldwide market trends, currency exchange rates, regulatory frameworks by the government, and tax policies.

These factors significantly impact customers’ cost of replenishing cooking gas per KG.

Fluctuations in exchange rates substantially influence the cost of importing cooking gas into Nigeria.

As the local currency’s value varies against other currencies, the price of cooking gas may change, impacting customers’ purchasing power.

Nigerians witnessed a high increase in cooking gas early this year, 2024; according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the price of refilling 12.5kg of cooking gas increased from N10,253 in February 2023 to N15,060 in February 2024, which indicates an increase of 46.88%.

Several factors contribute to pricing differences in the cooking gas markets across the country, including transportation costs, infrastructural limitations, market competition, and government interference.

Understanding all of this helps provide insight into the causes of pricing inconsistencies.
